Colin Montgomerie
Achievements
What more can be said about Colin Montgomerie, who for a long time was the best player in the world never to have won a Major tournament, but how he tried! He has in fact been runner up in no fewer than five 'Majors' including one at the PGA Championship in 1995. Recently he was runner up in 2006 at the US Open behind Michael Campbell and also at the British Open in 2005, where he finished behind Tiger Woods. There will be many who hope that Colin will win through eventually. Despite his disappointments in Major tournaments, Colin has one of the greatest records in Ryder Cup golf. He has played in the European Ryder Cup eight times and is yet to be beaten in singles. He has also won the European Tour of Merit eight times. He has 40 professional wins worldwide and has been as high as number two in the world rankings. He came back to top form with an excellent 2nd in the French Open in June, but for od reasons Colin was not able to improve further and his form approaching the Championship this week has to be regarded as less that mediocre.
World Ranking
He is currently ranked 85th in the world.
Playing Style
Colin for many years was described as having the best drive in golf with his judgement of distances impeccable, add that to his solid iron play and to his aggressive style then it is easy to understand his success. His putting however while very good, is not his strongest suit and is partially blamed for his misfortune in the Majors.
