2008 Venue - Oakland Hills Country Park

PGA Oakland Hills Country ParkThe 2008 USPGA Championship will be contested on the South Course at Oakland Hills Country Club, situated in the Bloomfield Township of Michigan. The course known affectionately as ‘The Monster’ is a par 70, stretching over 7445 yards. It is one of the highest ranked course’s in America, if not the world. It was designed by Donald Ross, the foremost golf architect of the time. It opened for play in 1918, since then it has played host to two PGA Championships (1972 & 1979) and six US Opens, the most recent being in 1996. It also hosted the Ryder Cup in 2004.

Probably the most difficult hole on the course is the 16th. This 406 yard, par 4, demands total accuracy from the tee in order to negotiate the dog leg right approach to the hole. The fairway is very narrow and the green is very small and usually fast. The last five holes on the south course are known as the 'fearsome fivesome'.

The greens generally on the South Course are very difficult, there are some holes where players can be aggressive, but when the greens are playing quick it will be essential to keep the ball below the hole. This might mean plenty of fun for the spectators but if the course is playing tough it will mean much frustration for players.

It is clearly a course that requires highly accurate approach play, a steely determination to win, plus plenty of courage on the greens.
